Ormeau 5-5 Loop

Club Friendly Vs Loop Table Tennis Club Dublin

Ormeau 5-5 Loop

There was an exciting game on Saturday 25 May with the visit of a team from the Loop club in Dublin to Ormeau for a challenge match.

Our club was represented by Tim (1), Ranjit (2), Emma (3) and Anjali (4) with Ranjit acting as captain for the day. Loop had an international team with Felipe (1) from Brazil, Bruno (2) from Brazil, Chrystian (3) from Italy and Belinda (4) from Netherlands. Belinda was the Loop captain.

The match was played in the same format as the B&D league with 8 singles and 2 doubles and with two evenly matched teams the result was in doubt until the very end. Loop won the first two singles to go 2-0 ahead with Ormeau coming back with the next two singles to draw level a 2-2. Again Loop went 4-2 ahead, winning the next two singles and Loop again replied to make it 4-4.

Everything now depended on the two doubles matches. In the first match Emma and Tim beat Chrystian and Bruno 3-2 after trailing 2-1. This put Ormeau in front for the first time at 5-4.
The final match was between father and daughter – Ranjit and Anjali – and Felipe and Belinda. Trailing 2-1 going into the fourth set the Ormeau pair narrowly lost 12-10 in the fourth set to leave the final score Ormeau 5-5 Loop.
This match was played in a great spirit with many memorable rallies and shots. One amazing shot was from behind his back by Felipe in the middle of a rally with Ranjit.

Although all the matches were exciting, perhaps the stand our matches were the singles match between Ranji and Bruno which ebbed and flowed throughout in an exciting 5 setter and the five set doubles between Emma/Tim and Chrystian/Bruno. However young Anjali’s victory was perhaps the match of the day as our youngest player held her nerve and with no mean ability came back from 0-2 to win 3-2 against Chrystian, a very good Italian player with an amazing backhand.

Many thanks to everyone who made this game possible, to the players, some who played at very short notice, to the two captains Ranjit and Belinda.

Thanks again to Ranjit for opening the club and preparing the tables and scoreboards and to Gervis and Phil for their help and advice. Thanks also to Emma for fitting the match into a tight work schedule.
