Cathcart & Naumi Reach Czech Open Doubles QF

Owen Cathcart concluded his campaign at the Czech Open Premium World Junior Circuit event on Saturday reaching the QF of the Junior boys doubles along with good friend Alex Naumi (FIN) with an impressive string of victories over Japan, Israel, and the Czech Republic before being knocked out to a strong Austrian and Moldovan duo.

Owen had the opportunity to play the new Japanese wonder kid Sora Matsushima (11) tipped worldwide to be the next Harimoto. They met firstly in the singles and then again in the doubles event.

Sora became an online sensation just a few months back with the ITTF and Table Tennis Daily sharing footage of this incredible talent. Unfortunately for Owen, the unseeded Japenese sensation lived up to the online hype knocking out Cathcart in the last 64. Credit where credit is due, however, as in the very next rounds Sora went on to defeat several seeds including the No.5 seed.

Cathcart having lost to Sora in the singles event was well up for their opening doubles match along with Naumi. This timethe European duo overcome the Japanese in a convincing turntable 3-1 scoreline.

Owen will now travel to Sweden to play the Swedish Junior Open as well as Safirs Mens Elite event due to start mid week. Sophie Earley along with club coach Gervis Knox will also be attending this event! Good luck Owen and Sophie!
